In December 2026, South Korea is going to carry out a pilot cargo shipment along the Northern Sea Route. This was announced by General Secretary of the Korea Arctic Shipping Association Subeom Choi at the 29th St Petersburg International Economic Forum. The companies to perform this shipment have already been selected.
“This pilot shipment will be a stress test for our shipping industry in terms of coordination between agencies, information exchange, insurance, estimating the transportation cost and fine-tuning of interaction with the partners,” believes Subeom Choi.

He added that the Korean authorities regard future cooperation in the Northern Sea Route in four main areas: logistics, shipbuilding, connectivity between ports and information-research cooperation.
