Participants in the conference New Frontiers in Global Logistics and the Arctic Logistics Framework, held on the platform of the 29th St Petersburg International Economic Forum, discussed the development of the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor (TATC) as a possible response to the challenges of the modern global logistics.
Presidential Special Representative for International Cooperation in Transport Igor Levitin noted that today global transportation is being transformed and the role of alternative routes has become considerably more important.
“I think that the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor has a great future, yet in case of its joint use only. Interaction of countries and companies is very important for quick reaction to external challenges,” he underscored.
Minister for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic Alexei Chekunkov named the key factors of developing the TATC: “They are the fundamentals of the state policy and the Arctic Zone development strategies, which determine the main approaches, whereby the TATC will be implemented.”
He added that the ministry is always ready to lend its shoulder to all the project participants in working out specific actions within the trans-Arctic corridor.
Deputy Chairman of the Maritime Board Sergei Vakhrukov noted that at present almost all the levels of the executive authorities joined the project of the TATC comprehensive development, while it is also necessary to develop transportation and logistics routes inside the regions.
“This comprehensive project should first be used for the development of our country and provide new opportunities for our regions,” stressed Vakhrukov.
He emphasized that the development of the Northern Sea Route and the TATC should include the Ob-Irtysh transport waterway and use the potential of the Yenisei.
“This will provide for redistribution of cargo flows across Russia on the basis of the country’s transport and logistics balance, using most favorable economic routes. Then we will have the right approach. Still, we already need to come over from talking to calculations and a proper model,” he concluded.
