The Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) and the Northern Sea Route General Administration (Glavasevmorput) have signed an agreement enabling the latter to supply AARI with data on hydrometeorological conditions in the area of the Northern Sea Route.
According to the AARI press service, the data will be used to specify long-term forecasts of ice conditions and verify models of short-term ice forecasts.

“The NSR General Administration accumulates first-hand information on real navigation conditions from ships plying the route. The AARI, in turn, has scientific models, prognostic systems, and archives of observations for many years. Pooling these flows will make it possible to raise by much the accuracy of short-term ice forecasts and the quality of navigation support,” AARI Director Alexander Makarov said.

AARI specialists will also be included in joint coordinating councils and working groups and take part in planning icebreaker assistance and working out proposals for strategic documents on the development of the Arctic and the Northern Sea Route.
According to Glavsevmorput General Director Sergei Zybko, the agreement will enable his Administration to access the AARI’s advanced scientific research results. The AARI, in turn, will have access to the invaluable practical fleet data.
“This symbiosis is a guarantee of steady development of the entire Arctic transport system,” he stressed.
