Minister of the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic Alexei Chekunkov held a working meeting with Governor of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area Dmitry Artyukhov. The parties discussed implementation of the master plans for the region’s backbone settlements and social development issues, the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area Government press service reports.One of the main discussion points was the progress of the Salekhard airport renovation project. The renovation is included in the long-term plan for the comprehensive socioeconomic development of the Salekhard–Labytnangi metropolitan area until 2035.The project implies construction of a new terminal with two jetway bridges and a heated gallery, as well as the airport infrastructure modernization.At the meeting, the region head spoke about implementing master plans for such backbone towns as Novy Urengoy and Noyabrsk, as well as the Salekhard–Labytnangi metropolitan area. Infrastructure upgrades there have been scheduled for the coming 10 years.In addition, the parties discussed the success of the Arctic Mortgage program: Yamal residents have got 2,547 loans under the program since late 2023. At present, Yamal is placed third among the Russian Arctic regions by the number of such mortgages issued.As Dmitry Artyukhov noted, to date, 176 business people have been granted the status of the Russian Arctic zone resident. The region is carrying out 194 projects to the amount of 63.1 billion rubles. They will create 2,846 jobs. Most Arctic zone residents in Yamal work in the service sector (43%), construction (26%), and tourism (6.25%).According to Chekunkov, the single preferential treatment regime for the Arctic and the Far East, which is currently being elaborated, is to create even more attractive conditions for investors in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area.

“The Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area is one of the Russian strategic regions providing for the country’s energy security. Building up of its industrial capacity should be accompanied by infrastructure upgrading, better urban environment and affordability of housing,” emphasized Alexei Chekunkov.
