The Foreign Ministry building hosted an event dedicated to the Day of Indigenous Small-Numbered Peoples of Russia. It was held to promote a responsible approach to sustainable development of the Arctic, preserve the legacy of indigenous peoples, and advance the international dialogue for stability in the high latitudes, Press Service of the Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs (FAEA) reports.In his remarks at the meeting, FAEA chief Igor Barinov noted that the indigenous small –numbered peoples were making an important contribution to national security of Russia.Commenting on the sustainable development of the Arctic, he stressed that Russia consistently sought to create a balance between economic development and efforts to preserve the traditional way of life of indigenous peoples.Participants in the event were also addressed by Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, who referred to promoting Russia’s agenda in the high latitudes as an important focal point for the Foreign Ministry and the Association of Indigenous, Small-Numbered Peoples of the North, Siberia and Far East of the Russian Federation.

Commenting on the sustainable development of the Arctic, he stressed that Russia consistently sought to create a balance between economic development and efforts to preserve the traditional way of life of indigenous peoples.
“Russia is implementing conceptual approaches towards the state nationalities policy and thus achieves a balance between its economic development and the traditional lifestyles in the Arctic. This balance between the state interests, business interests, and public interests is a key condition for the development of the Arctic region,” he said.

“As a major Arctic power, Russia is invariably open to a mutually respectful dialogue and constructive cooperation. It also consistently advocates a full-format resumption of the Council’s activities,” he noted.
