Demand for engineers and drone industry specialists growing in the Arctic
Training programs related to unmanned technologies and other engineering fields are becoming increasingly important in the Arctic, according to the press service of the Arkhangelsk Region Governor, speaking to RIA Novosti.
Today, the Arctic is closely associated with the Northern Sea Route, which is the central component of the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor, according to Ivan Dementyev, Deputy Chairman of the Arkhangelsk regional government.
“Like other logistics routes, the Northern Sea Route is increasingly becoming a platform for the experimental application of unmanned technologies. Last year, the company Sea Project, together with the Arkhangelsk regional government, tested autonomous navigation in the White Sea. So today, in addition to traditional maritime and shipbuilding professions, there is growing demand for skills related to autonomous systems, including programming, artificial intelligence, and modern communications technologies,” he said.
Another emerging area of workforce training in the region is materials science, Dementyev added.
“The harsh Arctic environment provides an ideal testing ground for scientific developments in construction, natural resource extraction, and instrumentation. A broad range of engineering disciplines is now being taught, including at Northern (Arctic) Federal University,” he explained.
The deputy chairman also highlighted the achievements of Arkhangelsk researchers, including new technologies for construction on permafrost, the use of saponite and basalt for producing innovative building materials, and the cultivation of modified diamond crystals for producing high-precision quantum sensors.
