Air ambulances in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area fly hospital patients, post-treatment, to towns near their homes for free. This practice is especially popular with nomads, as per the press service of the Government of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area.
Today, four air ambulance units operate in Yamal, including Salekhard, Tarko-Sale, the Tazovsky and Yamalsky districts. Each unit has its own Mil Mi-8 helicopter. Since early 2026, local air ambulance have flown 790 missions and delivered 782 patients, including 150 children, to emergency hospitals.
Since 2025, the region stipulates standard contracts allowing air ambulance crews to fly patients to their places of residence. Earlier, local residents had to wait for regular flights. From now on, air ambulances heading in the same direction fly patients, post-treatment, to their homes. In January-April 2026, these aircraft delivered about 200 Yamal residents to their home parts, and over 680 people have been re-evacuated since 2025.
Most often, local hospitals admit patients with cardiovascular diseases, as well as injured and pregnant persons. The Tazovsky District accounts for almost 48 percent of all re-evacuated patients, followed by the Yamalsky District with 41 percent.
