The President held a meeting with representatives of Russia’s indigenous minorities. Participants included indigenous peoples of the North and Far East – among them the Yukaghirs, Chukchi, Nivkhs, Khanty, Kamchadals, Nenets, Dolgans, and Sami.
During the meeting, the President noted that each of the 47 indigenous peoples is an integral part of Russia and its unique diversity, serving as a keeper of unique traditions, cultures, and ways of life. Preserving and supporting them, as well as ensuring their well-being, is essential to safeguarding and strengthening the unity of the nation as a whole.
The head of state reminded the audience that Russia historically emerged as a union of peoples.
“In fact, no matter whether you belong to an ethnic majority or minority, all the peoples of Russia form a single family, and this is what makes us strong. Ethnic groups both large and small must all realize that this is our common home, our homeland. This is the only way we can feel confident and advance in a sustained and steady manner,” the President said.
He also noted that programs are being implemented in Russian regions covering 76 native languages, including indigenous languages and that a comprehensive range of measures is also in place to support traditional livelihoods, such as reindeer herding, hunting, and many other activities.
“On the whole, the efforts of the state aim to help small peoples to retain the traditions of their ancestors and to pass them on to new younger generations with due respect and care, and preferably in full volume. As you know, we are now implementing large-scale plans for the development of the Far East, Siberia and the Arctic. That said, the interests of the people, including those whose ancestors lived on these territories for centuries, are our absolute priority,” Vladimir Putin noted.
At the end of the meeting, the President stated that support for indigenous peoples would continue.
“The state’s policy is not only aimed at preserving these ethnic groups but is also driven by the difficult living conditions they face. Of course, the benefits of modern civilization can be accessed even from a chum. But nevertheless, living conditions are harsh, so we must – and we will – continue to support the people who live under such conditions,” the President concluded.
Among the guests at the meeting was Polina Kharybina, a representative of the Sami people. In a comment to the Arctic.ru portal, she said it was a great honor to take part.
“I’m thrilled to have been among the participants in the roundtable discussion with the nation’s president,” Polina Kharybina shared.
According to her, the meeting was productive and drew great interest from the head of state. The participants were able to address important topics and felt heard.

“We feel the government’s support, and I was able to thank the President for that. I’m very happy – I’m overwhelmed. There were many participants, but everyone had the chance to speak, which is very valuable!” she said.
