The proposed amendments to the legislation allow the production of canned cod liver not only by industrial ocean fishing companies but also by coastal firms fishing within the Northern Fishery Basin.According to the press service of the Murmansk Region government, the initiative includes the transportation, storage and unloading of products on Russian territory until January 1, 2030.“At present, cod liver produced by coastal fishing companies can only be processed and canned on the coastal processing plants, which leads to the disposal of part of the raw materials due to their short lifetime,” senator from the Murmansk Region Yelena Dyagileva said. She pointed out that up to three million cans can be produced thanks to the initiative of the Kola Arctic authorities, which will bring an additional tax budget revenue.“Even though the scale of such coastal fishing is modest at up to 25,000 tons a year, it can yield about 750 tons of cod liver, a valuable product that can be processed on fishing vessels,” Yelena Dyagileva noted. She added that the law has been drafted to promote a thrifty use of water biological resources in the course of coastal fishing.
