A meeting of the Coordinating Council of the Association of Indigenous Small-Numbered Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East was held in the Nenets Autonomous Area. The event took place in Naryan-Mar at the initiative of Governor Irina Gekht, on the eve of Indigenous Small-Numbered Peoples Day of the Russian Federation, the regional press service reported.During the meeting, the governor outlined measures to support indigenous communities.“We have developed a comprehensive system of support, including various grants and social benefits. We purchase equipment and provide meat subsidies to reindeer herders. The region also offers subsidies for the construction of nomadic housing for young families. We plan to expand the eligibility age from 35 to 40, because we understand how important it is to preserve communities in the tundra,” Gekht emphasized.Participants discussed cooperation with subsoil user companies, using the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area as an example, shared the experience of commissioners for the rights of indigenous minorities, and outlined plans for future work.As part of the concept for the sustainable development of indigenous small-numbered peoples, a proposal was put forward to extend Arctic and Far Eastern mortgage programs to indigenous communities.In addition, during the meeting, the Governor of the Nenets Autonomous Area announced several upcoming initiatives in the region. A forum for women engaged in nomadic livelihoods is scheduled for 2027, and the second stage of the School of Public Diplomacy program will take place in the Nenets Autonomous Area later this year.
