Governor of the Trans-Baikal Territory: This region handles 70% of all trade
On April 23–24, Chita hosted the New Horizons – 2026 Foreign Economic Forum, an outreach site of the Eastern Economic Forum. The event was attended by more t.han 500 representatives of the authorities, businesses, and foreign agencies. According to the Trans-Baikal Territory’s governmental press service, the forum focused on promoting tourism in the territory, expanding cooperation in energy and mining, and improving the transport, logistical and digital infrastructure.
“In a changing global picture, relations between Russia and China, as well as relations with Mongolia and our other allies are of fundamental importance. Currently, the Trans-Baikal Territory handles nearly 70 percent of all our trade, for which reason this region has a strategic significance,” Governor Alexander Osipov said.
The forum’s key event was its plenary meeting entitled “New Horizons in the Strategic Partnership of Russia, China, and Mongolia,” which centered on international relations.
Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stressed that during the years of its existence, the forum had become an effective venue for working out solutions for the benefit of the regions. She also noted the importance of friendly relations between countries amid the emergence of a multi-polar world.
“Now that the global politics and economy are going through significant transformations, Eurasia is where the outlines of a would-be multi-polar world are taking shape. The key role in this process is associated with Russia’s efforts to promote ties with states in the region. This cooperation is becoming a fulcrum of Eurasian integration,” Maria Zakharova said.
A special emphasis was placed on the Trans-Baikal Territory’s role as a strategic transport and logistical hub. Xu Dehong, head of the logistics and exhibition economy department at the Xian International University (PRC) stressed its importance for developing logistical ties between the two countries.
“China has maintained Russia’s status as a major trade and economic partner for the past 15 years. We are strengthening our cooperation in the area of logistical hubs and multi-mode transportation. We can create an effective, safe and stable supply system in Eurasia. We hope for a highly effective cooperation with the Trans-Baikal Territory in this regard,” Mr. Xu Dehong said.
The forum was sponsored by the Government of the Trans-Baikal Territory jointly with the Roscongress Foundation and with support from the Foreign Ministry of Russia, the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and regional corporations and agencies.
