Field and literature data on geology, hydrology, geomorphology and morpho-litho-dynamics of sea shores and estuary systems of these territories have been summed up as an atlas/research paper for the first time, as per the press service of the Department of Geography at Lomonosov Moscow State University.
The atlas Geomorphology of Sea Shores and Estuary Systems of Rivers in Chukotka and the Koryak Plateau contains 31 original maps showing the geomorphology of sea shores and estuary systems of rivers of the East Siberian, Chukchi and Bering seas and the Bering Strait. The edition also evaluates the response of coastal and estuary systems of outlying seas to global changes of natural conditions and anthropogenic impact.
“For several decades (1969-2023) the staff of the Department of Geography at Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Oceanology Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Amosov Northwestern Federal University studied the Arctic coast of Russia. They collected a tremendous amount of scientific data on hydrology, morpho-dynamics of riverbeds and geomorphology of estuaries of major rivers. The atlas is based on this data,” Yelena Povalishnikova, a senior research associate at the Faculty of Land Hydrology, the Department of Geography at Lomonosov Moscow State University, noted.
The research paper also formulates the conformity of coastal and estuary processes of Russia’s Northeastern coast to the laws of nature and their regional specifics, predicts the development of coastal and estuary systems of Chukotka and the Koryak Plateau when water levels of the world’s oceans continue to rise and also evaluates anthropogenic impact on natural systems of estuary zones.
The book is intended for specialists in the field of geology, geomorphology, hydrology, coastal and riverbed processes and frugal nature management. The research paper was prepared by scientists from the Department of Geography at Lomonosov Moscow State University together with their colleagues from the Shirshov Oceanology Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
