The launch of a modern coal transshipment terminal opens up new export opportunities for Russian coal producers while also marking the beginning of an environmental transformation in the regional capital, as coal handling operations will gradually be relocated beyond the city limits of Murmansk, Governor Andrei Chibis stated during his report at a United Russia party supporters’ forum.
Rail traffic has now been opened to the port via the Vykhodnoy–Lavna railway line. The terminal’s planned capacity stands at 18 million tons of coal per year, with the potential to increase to 24 million tons. Construction is over 96 percent complete, with nearly 1,000 people involved in the project.
Total investment in the construction of the Lavna port has exceeded 87 billion rubles. The project is being implemented as part of the Living in the North public program and is expected to expand port capacity, ensure stable year-round exports to global markets, and create new opportunities for the development of infrastructure in the port of Murmansk.
