The experiment will take place in the Yamal-Nenets, Nenets and Chukotka autonomous areas, in the Arkhangelsk and Murmansk regions, the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), the Republic of Karelia and the Komi Republic, as per a government resolution.
There are plans to conduct about 600 drone missions over a period of three years and to scan a 6,000 square kilometer sector of the Northern Sea Route for sea-ice formations.
“We expect that, during this period, all aspects of operating unmanned systems will be thoroughly tested. In the longer term, they should become an integral part of a comprehensive system supporting year-round navigation in northern latitudes,” Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin noted at a meeting with deputy prime ministers.
The use of an ice reconnaissance system aboard a ship-based drone will become the main digital innovation. The systems will make it possible to quickly obtain ice reconnaissance data and to facilitate safe navigation on the Northern Sea Route.
During the experiment, it is also intended to deliver freight by air and to perform other aviation operations.
