The protected designation of origin (PDO), Zaonezhye Embroidery, has been registered by the Federal Service for Intellectual Property. The registration will make it possible to expand markets and bring awareness of the region’s cultural heritage across the country.
The main feature of the Zaonezhiye embroidery that emerged in the 13th –14thcenturies AD is its austere coloring: white on red, red on white, or white on white.
This handicraft industry is the seventh Karelia-registered regional brand, preceded by rye pies, Karelian honey, strawberries, fruit jelly, willow herb, and marshmallow.
