The polar bear population consists of four distinct sub-populations: Barents Sea, Kara Sea, Laptev Sea, and Chukotka-Alaska, First Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Konstantin Tsyganov told the plenary meeting of the International Forum “Polar Bear Universe.”

“According to expert estimates, their total number is 6,000 individuals,” he said.

In keeping with the latest statistics available in the context of the “polar bear census” that his ministry launched in 2022, a rise in the bear population has been registered at the Bear Islands Nature Reserve in Yakutia.
“In 2025, the local polar bear population numbered 182 species as against 176 in 2023. This means that the nature reserve, which was created in 2020 […], has achieved its first results in efforts to preserve the polar bear,” Mr. Tsyganov said.
He also reminded his audience that the census had counted 864 species on the Wrangel Island, where a drone-assisted monitoring method was also tested. Moreover, it proved possible to use AI in counting after a training session based on dozens of thousands of high-resolution images.
