Current issues related to ensuring safe navigation along the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor were discussed at a meeting of the Ensuring the National Interests of the Russian Federation in the Arctic section of the Scientific Expert Council of the Marine Board of the Russian Federation.During the meeting, a concept for creating a state environmental monitoring system in the waters of the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor (TTC) was presented. The system is to be implemented within the framework of a unified state environmental monitoring system. The concept is intended to become an integral part of the environmental management cycle in the Arctic zone. The event participants noted that, given the growing cargo transportation in the seas of the Russian Arctic and the ongoing development of port infrastructure, greater attention must be paid to environmental safety in these waters.“The increase in anthropogenic pressure is occurring against the backdrop of Arctic warming and the growing connectivity of the region with other parts of the world. This creates multiple and cumulative stresses for Arctic ecosystems,” said Alexander Makarov, Director of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute and Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The expert added that the Arctic is currently turning into a zone of geopolitical tension, and environmental risks are increasingly part of the international agenda. If environmental issues are not given sufficient attention, the country could face risks to economic development and to the investment climate in the region. The proposed environmental monitoring concept will make it possible to track environmental changes and assess the effectiveness of measures taken in the development of the TTC, helping to minimize negative impact on Arctic waters.
