Despite international tensions, Russia is ready for constructive cooperation with the concerned partners in the Arctic, Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department of European Affairs, Vladislav Maslennikov, noted at a plenary session of the international science and practical conference “The Far East and he Arctic: Sustainable Development“ held in Moscow.

“Regardless of the geopolitical situation, Russia has always advocated and advocates efforts to maintain peace and stability in the high latitudes, while remaining committed to international law,” Maslennikov noted.

According to the diplomat, the Arctic Council remains the only international platform in the North, and it currently functions only at expert level.

“The Russian Foreign Ministry will continue to strive to resume the full-fledged operation of the Arctic Council; we maintain regular contacts with the incumbent Danish chairmanship and the organization’s Secretary, and we are trying to inform colleagues, members of the Arctic Council, about our positions,” Maslennikov said during his remarks.

The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the Northern Sea Route was becoming an attractive alternative to traditional intercontinental routes against the backdrop of a conflict in the Middle East region.
“Additional prospects for expanded international cooperation are opening up in the context of launching the initiative for developing the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor and its key element, the Northern Sea Route,” he added.
