Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Alexander Moiseyev, reported a rise in the number of foreign military exercises in the Arctic when addressing the plenary session of the Chilingarov Arctic: Present and Future forum. He noted that NATO reconnaissance aircraft have increased the frequency of their Arctic flights by 40 percent over the past five years, while the overall situation in the region remains tense and increasingly complex.“Instead of talks about cooperation in the Arctic, we are increasingly hearing the opposite – including claims that the Arctic could become a region of future conflict,” Alexander Moiseyev said.He stated that the development of the region’s land and maritime areas is Russia’s historical prerogative, and that the protection of Russia’s Arctic territories is a direct responsibility of the Navy.“The Arctic is obviously an integral part of the Russian Federation and has been under its sovereignty for centuries. It will remain so in the future. The development of the Arctic and its land and maritime territories is our indisputable, historically established right. For the Navy, protecting these northern territories recognized by law as Russian sovereign land is a direct duty,” Moiseyev emphasized.
