Specialists from the Prometheus Central Research and Development Institute of Structural Materials have developed a metal that can withstand temperatures of minus 163 degrees Celsius, with due consideration for the requirements of gas tankers and Arctic shelf development projects.
The new steel owes its fantastic durability to nitrogen components that do not increase its production cost. Its wear resistance far exceeds the parameters of most structural and stainless steels.
Apart from enhanced durability, scientists note its resistance to corrosion and non-magnetic properties; consequently, this type of steel can be installed near ships’ navigational instruments, without creating magnetic interference.
The viscous collapse behavior is another advantage; such steel is less prone to sudden damage.
