According to guidelines from the Department of Northern Indigenous Small-Numbered Peoples of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area, reindeer hide coverage for a chum must be made of at least 30 reindeer hides while the tent poles must be made of young wood processed using traditional methods.“The draft documents defines public services provided by the Department of Northern Indigenous Small-Numbered Peoples of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area and introduces recommended quality standards for essential materials required for traditional livelihoods of the northern small-numbered indigenous peoples in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area,” the department reports.The document also provides quality recommendations for essential household items such as furnaces and kerosene lamps.The new standards will take effect on January 2, 2026.
