Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov said on the sidelines of the Ecosystem: Protected Territory National Environmental Youth Forum that the region’s eight projects would get grants worth a total of 54million rubles for the study and conservation of rare species.
“It is gratifying that the Kamchatka Territory has filed more projects than others and got considerable federal support. Now the activists should implement their initiatives. They are looking for team members. For Kamchatka residents, this is a chance to join a team planning to implement important environmental projects,” Mr. Solodov said.
The initiatives that have been supported include projects to study and conserve key species of marine mammals, such as the rare Okhotsk Sea population of gray whales, sea beavers in the northern Kuril Islands, and sea lions on Kamchatka’s last reproductive rookery. Considerable funds have been allocated for the project to create a comprehensive environmental biodiversity monitoring system in the Commander Islands National Park.
Grants have also been assigned to educational and enlightenment initiatives, including the plan to develop a strategy for the rational use of endemic fish species in unexplored lakes at the Bystrinsky Nature Park, the Teddy’s Rules project, the Creation co-participation expedition on the Bering Island, and the Protected Kamchatka motor expedition.
