Chukotka establishes Reindeer Herder’s Day

Chukotka Governor Vladislav Kuznetsov suggested that the new holiday be celebrated on September 30, press service of the Chukotka Autonomous Area’s Government reports.

Chosen as the holiday date is the birthday of a legendary local reindeer herder, Anatoly Tynerou, who died at age 78 in January 2026.

“This will be a tribute of memory to all those who have devoted their life to the tundra and the conservation of our traditions,” Governor Kuznetsov said at the opening of a forum for workers of traditional industries in Anadyr.

With its 62,000 reindeer, the governor said, Chukotka ranked first in the country in terms of breeding stock numbers.
