Senator Novikov: Arkhangelsk Region’s development potential lies in cooperation with non-Arctic countries
The Arkhangelsk Region has a strategic role in providing for Russia’s strategic interests in the Arctic, including through establishing advantageous cooperation with non-Arctic states, member of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Ivan Novikov said addressing the 15th Arctic: Today and the Future international forum.
In his opinion, the region’s economic potential largely depends on the development of logistic chains, particularly with the Northern Sea Route.
“At present, the Arkhangelsk port delivers cargoes to Brazil, Ghana, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Türkiye, and Chile,” he said, adding that the largest amount of container shipments head for China.
Ivan Novikov noted that the Arctic Express No.1 multimodal logistics route, which links Central Russia to China by rail and the Northern Sea Route, was jointly opened due to the assistance from the Chinese Embassy. Since 2024, the total amount of shipments has made up over 17,000 containers.
“As regards actual parameters, the cargo turnover is expected to reach 25 million tonnes by 2031. This is a planned objective being developed by the region and the Government, as well as by our strategic partners,” Novikov added.
