Geography

The Arctic is the Earth's northern polar area and includes the Arctic Ocean and its seas: the Greenland Sea, the Barents Sea, the Kara Sea, the Laptev Sea, the East Siberian Sea, the Chukchi Sea, the Beaufort Sea, as well as Baffin Bay, the Foxe Basin, numerous straits and bays of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, the northern parts of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans; the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, Greenland, Spitsbergen, Franz Josef Land, Novaya Zemlya, Severnaya Zemlya, Novosibirsk Islands and Wrangel Island, as well as the northern coasts of the continents of Eurasia and North America.

A previously unknown piece of land has emerged in Borzov Bay off Severny Island, which is part of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. It measures approximately 400 meters long and 121 meters wide, with its central coordinates at 76°06'41,1''N latitude and 61°13'04,5''E longitude.

The Northern Fleet’s hydrographers have been monitoring the formation of the new island in Borzov Bay through satellite photographs for several years. In 2023, an attempt was made to survey the emerging island from the sea.

“Now, the hydrographers need to do some legwork to determine if the new discovery is real,” said Capt. 1st Rank Alexei Kornis, who heads a section at the Northern Fleet’s Hydrographic Service.
