Wildlife and environment

Wildlife and environment of the Arctic are unique. The region is home to more than 20, 000 species of plants, animals, mushrooms, and microorganisms, many of which are endemic.

The main feature of all Arctic animal species is their unique ability to survive in conditions that rank among the Earth's harshest.

Veterinary activities in the region were launched in February and completed in late September.

More than 20 vaccination teams were involved in the campaign. The teams included veterinary specialists and employees from among indigenous peoples of the North, as the regional government press service reported.

“Most of the reindeer live at private farms; this is the region’s specific feature. It means that all veterinary actions are to be carried out by the government veterinary service,” said head of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area veterinary service Yevgeny Popov.

The reindeer are tagged and accounted alongside with the vaccination. This year 104,000 specimens got the tags.

Veterinary actions also cover the reindeer-breeders’ dogs: they are vaccinated, treated for parasites and registered in the regional database.
