Monument to Yamal soldiers, defenders of Stalingrad, unveiled on Mamayev Kurgan

The dark graphite monument resembles a traditional Yamal tent, used by local nomads, with the dates of the Battle of Stalingrad (1942-1943) inscribed on it. Its central section features an image of the Northern Lights, as per the press service of the Government of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area.

“Twenty percent of the region’s residents deployed to the front. Hundreds of fellow Yamal residents are buried here near the Volga River. Today, we are not just unveiling the monument. Today, we are honoring the memory of Yamal residents who fought for peaceful skies and who gave their lives. We are infinitely grateful to them for this heroic feat,” Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area Sergei Yamkin said during the ceremony.

Two amateur archeologists from Yamal who took part in digging up unmarked military graves in the Volgograd Region received the right to unveil the monument on the 83rd anniversary of victory in the Battle of Stalingrad.
