The series of animated shorts highlights the culture, daily life, and traditions of the indigenous peoples of the North, which Umka, a young polar bear cub, introduces to viewers, according to the press service of the Agency for the Development of Northern Territories and Support of Indigenous Minorities of the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

“We aim not only to entertain our audience but also to broaden their horizons. The stories of the peoples of the North are truly worthy of attention: they are profound, vivid, and unique. Umka’s involvement makes the project more relatable and accessible for both children and adults,” said Yulia Osetinskaya, General Producer of Soyuzmultfilm.

The polar bear cub explores the lives and customs of the Khanty, Nanai, Chukchi, Eskimo, Nenets, Mansi, and Evenki peoples. Viewers will discover how it’s possible to celebrate the New Year several times, what an igloo and a yaranga are, why reindeer are the Northerners’ most trusted helpers, and much more. Each episode blends fairy-tale and documentary elements, showcasing the richness of northern crafts, folklore, traditional trades, and the relationship between people and Arctic nature.
