Government approves plan for implementing three-year Concept for the Sustainable Development of Indigenous Peoples of the North and Far Eastern Federal District

Over 100 different projects will aim to improve economic and social living conditions, to preserve traditional habitats and unique economic activities, as per the Government’s press service.

Projects for preserving traditional habitats aim to annually monitor the environmental state of these territories. Moreover, representatives of small-numbered ethnic groups will take part in public hearings, as regards the implementation of projects to develop natural resources.

Other aspects include the establishment of national tourist routes and itineraries featuring historical and cultural landmarks in traditional habitats of indigenous peoples, as well as efforts to sell traditional handicrafts on domestic and foreign markets.

The plan will aim to preserve the ethnic-cultural legacy and traditions of indigenous ethnic groups and to preserve and popularize cultural landmarks and non-material ethnic-cultural assets, including legends, songs and rituals.

Additionally, the plan envisions financial support for high-priority agricultural and reindeer-breeding projects, as well as measures to create a people-friendly and safe environment, such as improving the quality of communications networks and increasing the number of communities with broadband internet access. A separate section aims to provide schools (in areas where indigenous ethnic groups live) with up-to-date equipment and textbooks in native languages.
