China may revise its Arctic policy, the media say
China may revise its Arctic policy, including its intent to become a “great Polar power” by 2030, given the growing interest from the Nordic countries and possible agreement between the United States and Russia on cooperation in the region, says South China Morning Post referring to well-informed sources.
The publication recalled that Beijing had previously proposed the Polar Silk Road project as a follow-up to its ambitious Belt and Road Initiative, and the white paper on the country's Arctic policy, released in January 2018, declared that China remains an important state in the Arctic region, and one of the continental countries located very close to the Arctic Circle.
“China is involved in interregional and global problems related to the Arctic, specifically climate change, scientific research, use of transportation routes, exploration and development of natural resources, and security. All of this is important for the existence and development of the entire humankind and undoubtedly has an impact on China and all non-Arctic states as well,” the document reads.
