Komi Republic to get 746 million rubles for building new material-recovery facility

The funding will be allocated under a long-term plan for the comprehensive development of the Vorkuta agglomeration until 2035, as per the regional government’s press service.

This waste soring plant will include a landfill site for storing solid state utility waste in the town of Severny, part of Vorkuta. The facility will handle 17,000 metric tons of waste annually, and the landfill site’s annual capacity will be 15,000 metric tons.

“The project’s implementation will boost living standards of almost 67,000 people in Vorkuta. With the support of the Russian Government, we address environmental problems posed by the old landfill site, and we also introduce modern Arctic waste management standards,” Head of the Republic Rostislav Goldstein noted.

The project aims to phase out the old landfill site in Vorkuta, to reduce environmental impact, to process about nine percent of all regional solid-state utility waste, to extract at least 15 percent of secondary material resources for recycling and to bury less waste at the landfill site.
