Reindeer herders in the Far North settle into new dual-heated homes
The new homes for reindeer herding families have been built under a regional program to provide housing for indigenous small-numbered peoples leading a traditional lifestyle. The houses, constructed in Evenki Autonomous Area, exceed 50 square meters divided into two living spaces, according to the official website of the Krasnoyarsk Teritory’s government.
Designed for the harsh northern climate, the houses are built from squared timber and equipped with a dual-heating system, combining a traditional wood-burning stove with electric radiators.
According to Anton Narchuganov, head of the Agency for the Development of Northern Territories and Support of Indigenous Small-Numbered Peoples of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, 19 houses were completed in 2025 with a total investment exceeding 130 million rubles. The construction took place across nine communities: Baikit, Yessey, Surinda, Yukta, and Ekonda in Evenkia; Nosok, Popigai, and Kheta in Taimyr; and Farkovo in the Turukhansky District.
The housing improvement program for reindeer herders and trappers has been operational in the region since 2011. To date, it has provided housing for avout 270 families.
