Authorities plan measures to preserve the Nenets language – Governor

In 2026, the Nenets Autonomous Area (NAA) will launch television and radio broadcasting in the Nenets language. There will also be an increase in Nenets-language publications in the printed media, NAA Governor Irina Gekht told the Council on Inter-Ethnic Relations and Interaction with Religious Associations under the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly.

According to the Governor, only 19 percent of the population have a command of the Nenets language. To preserve the national language, interactive bilingual complexes are in the process of being introduced at the region’s kindergartens.

“We make them bilingual to ensure at least a minimal level of awareness of the native language at primary schools and kindergartens regardless of children’s ethnicity,” Governor Gekht added.

The NAA is also preparing for the Day of Small-Numbered  Indigenous Peoples of the North and the Day of Languages of the Peoples of Russia to be celebrated on April 30 and September 8, 2026, respectively.
