In developing the Northern Sea Route Russia is interested to enhance the port and coastal infrastructure of its Arctic regions, said Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Federal Structure, Regional Policy, Local Government and Northern Affairs Andrei Shevchenko at a news conference on the outcomes of the committee activity during the fall session.
He believes that a quality work of the Northern Sea Route requires provision for a year-round navigation and continued work to improve the coastal and port areas, as well as the fleet, and not only the icebreaking one. To this end it is necessary to take additional measures for attracting new labor force, young people in particular, to the Arctic and the Far East.
“We have a favorable migration flow to the Far East and the Arctic zone over the recent years. Still, we want very much to develop in these lands, which we see as backbone territories, not only production but what we call infrastructure for life,” he added.
Such projects as the Far Eastern Hectare and the Arctic Hectare work well enough for attracting people to the Far East and the Arctic, noted Andrei Shevchenko.
