Alexei Likhachev: Eight nuclear-powered icebreakers simultaneously operate on the Northern Sea Route

Today, four Project 22220 universal nuclear-powered icebreakers (Arktika, Sibir, Ural and Yakutia), two Project 10520 Arktika-class icebreakers (Yamal and 50 Let Pobedy), as well as two Project 10580 Taimyr-class icebreakers (Taimyr and Vaigach), are simultaneously operating on the Northern Sea Route, Rosatom General Director Alexei Likhachev said.

“This morning, eight nuclear-powered icebreakers are simultaneously operating and plying the waters for the first time in the history of our country and, of course, the entire Arctic territory,” Likhachev noted.

The icebreaker Yamal under the command of Marina Starovoitova, the first female captain of a nuclear-powered icebreaker, is now escorting its first vessel, he added.
