Over 50 billion rubles will be allocated to build The Rossiya icebreaker
In 2026, funds to be allocated to build the world’s most powerful Rossiya icebreaker will amount to 26.2 billion rubles, with another 26.7 billion rubles to be added to the sum in 2027, Explanatory Note to the Draft Budget of the Russian Federation says.
The nuclear-powered icebreaker will help to ensure year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route and lead expeditions to the Arctic.
The first-in-class icebreaker of the Leader project will be 209.2 meters long and 48 meters wide and have a full displacement exceeding 71,000 tons. It will be powered by two 315 MW Rhythm-400 reactors. According to the project, the ship will be able to negotiate four-meter-thick ice if moving constantly at a minimum speed.
