Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology approves the GOST national standard for preparing ice condition forecasts along the Northern Sea Route
Under the new standard the forecasts will be subdivided into short-term – up to three days, medium-term – from three to 15 days, long-term – from 15 days to six months and super long-term forecasts for periods from six months long, according to the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute’s press service.
The new standards are to be applied in making ice condition forecasts to provide for the safety of shipping and maritime operations in the Northern Sea Route area.
The document is based on the data from the World Meteorological Organization and legal regulations of the Russian Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring.
