Тaiga animals and birds are relocating to Taymyr tundra because of warming

Animals and birds living in taiga began to settle in tundra on the Taymyr Peninsula because of climate changes, according to a report by the press service of the Information and Analytical Center for Nature Conservation Support (Roszapovedtsentr) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

“Brown bears, sables, otters, minks, and lynxes have begun to actively colonize the Taymyr tundra. In the northwestern foothills of the Putorana Plateau, Eurasian water shrew, which used to be quite rare here, has become common,” said Deputy Director for Science and Environmental Education at the Taymyr Reserves institution Mikhail Bondar.

More and more often one can see in high latitudes of the Taymyr bird species whose northern nesting range was located significantly further to the south. Specifically, we regularly see the nests of Bewick's swan and pintail.

“In addition, it is evident that the goldfinch, American sandpiper, wood sandpiper, and spring warbler have established themselves in the nesting grounds. A significant number of bird species can be observed moving north or northwest. It has become common for barn swallows to fly north to Taimyr at a latitude of 76 degrees, gray cranes at 73–74 degrees, gray herons at 72 degrees, gray wagtails at 70–71 degrees, as well as for many other species,” added the scientist.
