The highest number of incidents involving bears approaching residential communities was recorded in the Primorye and Krasnoyarsk territories, as well as in the Irkutsk Region. This was reported by the press service of the Russian Government following a meeting on bear attacks.As Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev noted, over the past 30 years , the brown bear population has more than doubled. Currently, the population exceeds 300,000 individuals.“It is necessary to compile a list of regions that require additional funding to regulate the population of this predator. Based on this list, a draft directive on the allocation of the corresponding federal funds will be prepared in the near future,” – he emphasized.The vice-premier added that the Government is exploring the possibility of removing the brown bear from the list of limited species. He also instructed that coordination meetings be held at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (Minprirody) with the participation of regional governments and interested agencies.Meanwhile, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Alexander Kozlov proposed establishing baseline population standards for this predator in each specific locality.Earlier, a heightened alert regime was introduced in Trans-Baikal Territory due to wild animals entering residential communities. According to the press service of the regional Minprirodypro, an additional measure to regulate the predator’s population is a reward of 15,000 rubles for harvesting the animal in accordance with established legal procedures.In Pomorye, more than 80 incidents of bears approaching people OR entering residential communities have been recorded since April 2026. Compared to last year, the number of such incidents has increased fourfold.Furthermore, the Minprirody of Yakutia has proposed extending the brown bear hunting season in the Siberian and Far Eastern Federal districts to regulate the predator’s population.
