The first flight carrying 106 Aurora Airline passengers has departed from the new terminal at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk International Airport for Harbin, China. The new terminal will now service all international flights from the airport, reads a press release of the Sakhalin Region government.The main feature of the new terminal is ten counters of the biometric automated border control system. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport is the only airport in the Far East to feature this equipment, which is capable of handling up to 600 people per hour.Sakhalin Region Governor Valery Limarenko pointed out that the new terminal marked a major step in the development of the airport’s infrastructure. It will not only ensure comfort and safety for Russians going abroad and returning home, but will also allow the airport to increase the number of international flights.“It serviced 22,000 passengers on flights to Shanghai, Beijing and Harbin last year, and over 19,000 in the first eight months of 2026. I am sure that this figure will continue to grow,” the governor added.
