Earlier this year, the Russian Government passed an updated state ethnic policy strategy stipulating multiple measures to facilitate the development of Russia’s Far East, including in the context of its remote areas’ distinguishing features, General Director of the Assembly of Russia’s Peoples, Arthur Latypov, told the Arctic.ru website.
“It is important that this document sets an essential and timely reference point for preserving this unique ethnic and cultural essence of the region’s indigenous small –numbered
peoples. It is important to implement specific measures in this context, including the provision of grants for various initiatives, establishing regional centers for cultural development, streamlining school curricula and extracurricular studies to popularize and learn native languages and traditions,” he stressed.
According to Latypov, the Assembly of Russia’s Peoples intends to focus on work with young people (while implementing the strategy) and to involve them in projects that bring together people of different nationalities and religious denominations.
“It is necessary to expand the practice of ethnic and cultural forums and youth platforms by uniting representatives of all Far Eastern regions, to provide comprehensive support for people who frugally preserve native languages and culture and folk handicrafts that promote ethnic tourism,” Latypov explained.
He also noted the need to monitor inter-ethnic relations on a systemic basis for quickly exposing risks and responding to them with pinpoint precision.
“Instead of merely preserving diversity it’s necessary, by using this strategic planning document, to convert it into a resource of unity,” the General Director of the Assembly of Russia’s Peoples added.
