The nuclear icebreaker Chukotka now has the reactor units, electric propulsion motors, an accommodation section with cabins and recreation areas. To date, the vessel is 88.4 percent ready, the Baltic Shipyard press service reports.The shipbuilders have also completed all the necessary works in the galley, the heart of the vessel’s domestic section: they laid the coating, checked the fire safety systems and equipped it. The first meals have also been cooked on the vessel, which is considered a good maritime tradition and a symbolic launch.“Seafarers’ rations in the Arctic latitudes are not just comfort but a matter of health and energy for accomplishing challenging tasks. We are glad that the first meals cooked were bread and rissoles. It means that the galley operates properly and the crew will stay full and satisfied,” noted Director General of the Baltic Shipyard Alexander Konovalov.After the docking trials Chukotka will undergo contractor sea trials.Nuclear icebreaker Chukotka is the fifth Project 22220 vessel built at the Baltic Shipyard which were commissioned by Rosatom. Icebreakers of this type are believed to be most technologically advanced, powerful and able to navigate through ice. They can ensure year-round navigation in the west of the Arctic.
