Participants in a meeting on additional measures to guarantee the security of Russia’s Arctic Zone discussed navigation safety, the monitoring of natural resources and emergency response issues. The meeting in Severomorsk took place during a working visit by Presidential Aide and Maritime Board Chair Nikolai Patrushev.
According to the press service of the Government of the Murmansk Region, the meeting participants discussed a system of technical and information means and tools for monitoring the underwater and surface situation, the meteorological and ice situation and for exposing objects and threats.
“The Arctic is now turning into an arena of acute rivalry between leading global powers. In an effort to obtain unimpeded access to logistic routes and natural resources, countries of the collective West are purposefully trying to alter the regional balance of forces in this part of the world’s oceans in their favor and to weaken the sovereignty of the Russian Federation over its Arctic Zone,” Nikolai Patrushev said.
According to Murmansk Region Governor Andrei Chibis, the Arctic region has become a forward-based line of Russian interests and a center of political confrontation between leading states.
“The Murmansk Region occupies a strategic place in this agenda. This imposes double responsibility on the region, specifically, guaranteeing security and growth. In collaboration with divisions of the Defense Ministry, the Northern Fleet, the Federal Security Service and the Border Directorate, we are doing everything possible to boost security levels. A permanent regional command center functions, and we have established an integral system for repelling aerial and sea-going drone attacks,” the governor stressed.
Andrei Chibis also noted that living standards of service personnel of the Northern Fleet and the Leningrad Military District were a separate priority. Owing to a program for the renovation of closed administrative-territorial entities and military garrisons, the regional government has teamed up with the Russian Defense Ministry to steadily improve housing, roads, as well as the social and utility infrastructure.
