An Orkan speedboat, delivered to the Northern (Arctic) Federal University, this past February, was tested in Arkhangelsk, as per Arkhangelsk Regional Governor Alexander Tsibulsky.The test was conducted on the North Dvina River; specialists assessed the vessel’s performance in the manual mode and also checked cooperation between oversight agencies.“The staff of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University will work on all details of remote-controlled vessels’ navigation technologies; in the future, they will be able to develop and test their own domestic solutions in the field of guidance, navigation and environmental monitoring,” the Governor noted.He noted the impressive potential of unmanned vessels for Arctic regions. He believes that these vessels make it possible to reduce transport costs, to provide businesses with more affordable logistics and to create jobs.They are also intended to monitor the state of water ecosystems; this will make it possible to effectively monitor the state of water bodies and to minimize environmental impact; this issue is particularly topical in the Arctic.There are plans to hold multiple new tests and measurements, including hydrological research, in the near future.
