A working group under the Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs discussed at its meeting in Moscow developing corpora of the languages of the peoples of the Russian Federation to be included in the Yandex. Translate service. According to the Karelian Government press service, republican specialists are working on the corpora of the Karelian and Veps languages.

“We have achieved considerable results: over 70,000 parallel sentences in Russian and Karelian (with the target number 100,000) have been collected and sent to the corpus developers. The language model for an artificial intelligence system has also been completed, and the translations produced have undergone expert evaluation,” said Department Head of the Karelian Ministry of National and Regional Policy Yelena Migunova.

She added that about 40,000 sentences have been collected for the Veps language corpus and they will soon be delivered to the developers.
This project involves language specialists, teachers, personnel of the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History, members of the republican terminology and orthographic commission under the Head of the Republic of Karelia as well as Karelian and Veps non-government organizations.
To date, Yandex. Translate offers translations into 21 languages of the peoples of Russia. Recently, the translation platform was supplemented with the Adyghe language.
