The State Duma Committee on the Development of the Far East and Arctic has held a meeting focused on the system of so-called “northern bonuses” – percentage-based payments added to wages for people working in the Far North and equivalent areas, depending on how long an employee has worked in the region.
Following the discussion, the committee prepared a draft resolution with recommendations, including a proposal to streamline the procedure for calculating these bonuses and to introduce mechanisms for paying them from the first day of work.
According to the committee’s press service, the bonuses should be accrued and paid at the maximum rate starting from day one, primarily for federal employees and staff of federally funded organizations.
The statement notes that on-site inspections in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area, Arkhangelsk Region, Krasnoyarsk Territory, and Chukotka confirmed that the current mechanisms fail to provide real guarantees for employees working in harsh climatic conditions. The problem remains unresolved.
