Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yury Trutnev visited the Arctic Integrated Emergency and Rescue Center in Pevek during a working trip to Chukotka.
According to the press service of the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic, the center is tasked with protecting the population, territory, and critical national security facilities from both natural and man-made threats. Its area of responsibility covers the entire Chukotka Autonomous Area as well as a section of the Northern Sea Route.
Yury Trutnev noted that there are currently three such emergency and rescue centers operating in Russia, and that their number should be expanded to six.
“The Arctic Integrated Emergency and Rescue Center is an integral part of the Northern Sea Route system. This route is critically important for our country’s transport and logistics and is gaining popularity both within Russia and among neighboring nations. To ensure that people feel secure and know they can rely on timely assistance in any emergency, response centers must be established along the entire Northern Sea Route,” he emphasized.
The Arctic Center employs 50 specialists, including 29 rescuers currently on active duty. It is equipped with 31 units of modern specialized equipment, such as emergency response vehicles, all-terrain and off-road vehicles, hovercraft, and boats. The center’s core structure includes a search and rescue unit, a round-the-clock command center, an unmanned aerial systems unit, as well as logistics and medical support teams.
“The Arctic Center has significantly expanded capabilities for rapid emergency response. Its personnel operate on a 24/7 basis, carrying out search and rescue missions across the entire region. This ensures constant readiness and reduces response times in remote and hard-to-reach areas. Another key responsibility of the center is ensuring the safety and security of the Northern Sea Route,” Governor of the Chukotka Autonomous Area Vladislav Kuznetsov noted.
