The document stipulates regulations for the environmentally safe watching of whales, seals and marine birds in the Barents and White seas, as per the press service of the of the Government of the Murmansk Region.The recommendations include keeping a safe distance, speed limits for vessels near habitats of marine mammals and birds, regulating the number of simultaneously deployed vessels and limiting their stay near objects of interest.“The drafting of understandable regulations for watching marine wildlife will become a foundation for developing a sustainable regional tourism industry, based on safe animal-friendly and people-friendly contacts with pristine nature,” the region’s Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dmitry Bannikov noted.Representatives of state agencies, the academic community, public environmental protection organizations, the regional tourism business and shipowners worked on the document. Federal experts, including those from the Russian Academy of Sciences and specialized agencies, offered advice.
