Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University unveiled a textbook on the history of the Russian North for students majoring in historical sciences, according to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.“Earlier, we had no textbook on regional history for university students, only for school pupils. Our edition is quite unique because we view the history of the Arkhangelsk Region in the broad context of the entire Russian North (from Murmansk to Komi and the Nenets Autonomous Area), rather than locally. This allows students to comprehend the dynamics of economic and political processes, as well as ties between neighboring territories. Moreover, this full-fledged teaching aid contains a system of questions, analytical tasks and map studies. Apart from obtaining knowledge, this will help students use it in life,” textbook co-author Roman Boldyrev, a professor with the university’s General History Faculty, noted. As per the ministry’s report, the textbook was written by leading specialists in the field of regional history. The textbook is renowned for its inter-disciplinary approach; it analyzes political events and international processes in the Arctic, the territory’s economic development, as well as demographic and migration processes. The textbook prioritizes visual content, and has 252 illustrations, including archeological artifacts and archive photos, 24 maps compiled by the authors and reflecting key phases of the region’s development. Methodological aspects include questions for checking one’s progress and map-related assignments allowing students to become more deeply immersed in the subject and to conduct comparative analysis.
